| Location: | Menton in the South of France is known as ‘La
Perle de la France’ (The Pearl of France), and the
church of Saint-Michel is one of its most famous sights. Construction
began in 1619 under Honoré II, first Sovereign Prince
of Monaco (the city being under Monégasque control from
1346-1848 before becoming part of France in 1861). The church
was proclaimed a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1999. |
